Handwriting Without Tears
ExperienceI have taught in schools from the early intervention level through 8th grade. I realized that my passion is reading and tutoring one-on-one. I love getting to really know students and being able to help them develop new skills and become more confident readers.
I generally use the Orton-Gillingham method for reading instruction. I believe that a phonics-based approach is important for most struggling readers. I supplement this method, depending on the needs of the student. I use other programs and materials to work on fluency, comprehension, and to introduce more literature.
In addition to being Orton-Gillingham trained, I also have training in Handwriting Without Tears, Multisensory Grammar, and TouchMath. I truly believe that multisensory techniques help children to grasp and retain information, and they are FUN!
HobbiesI have truly found my passion in teaching reading. I enjoy spending my "free time" furthering my knowledge. I enjoy keeping up with the latest research in the field and taking online courses to keep my skills current.
Now that my own children are grown (3 in college and 1 in high school), I have more time for myself. I have turned into a bit of a walking fanatic. I can be seen walking all over Westerville and try to hike in Hocking Hills at least once a week. I also enjoy cycling and challenging myself with indoor rock climbing.
At the end of the day, I love to relax with my many animals and a good book!
